It’s a fascinating piece of game design that exposes a lot of the highs and lows of the series - and would be the last “main” game before Breath of the Wild completely overhauled the model. I watch Zelda speedruns perhaps too much, and always love watching SS get skewered like this. 3 100% race by mitchflowerpower, TheHaxor, and stewie_cartman, then a Skyward Sword run by gymnast86. Not long after that is the Super Mario Bros. I’ve never heard of this game, but I enjoy the runner (especially from his previous Star Wars runs), and sometimes, the best way to learn about semi-obscure games is to watch them get systematically taken apart by a talented player. On day one, I’ll be pulling up a chair at 4:04pm to watch CovertMuffin run Star Wars – Escape from Yavin 4: The Lost Maps. As always, you can watch it all on their twitch channel. The whole schedule lives here, but I wanted to point out a few highlights that I’ll be watching, as an armchair connoisseur of fine speedruns. It runs twice a year (with Summer Games Done Quick… in the summer), and as the kind of person who almost always has twitch speedruns on in the background while I work, it really is a sort of holiday.
It's cool how there's enough people in the world now who have this personal relationship with video games, that it would make sense for Colbert to put speedrunning on national TV.Now that the holidays are over, it’s time for gamer Christmas! Or, well, Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ), a weeklong, 24-hour-running speedrunning marathon where talented runners race through their favorite games for charity. It makes people look at video games, even classics they played for decades, in entirely new ways, and that's why they love to watch. How they were made, secrets the developers tucked in there, and game development in general. Pushing these games to the limit really tells us so much more about them. That's what really makes speedrunning so interesting. Or how about this Half-Life 2 run, which an entire team of players worked on for months! whaaaa!? You shouldn't even be able to reach the final battle as young Link, it's crazy! Or look at how this guy managed to glitch the game to warp him to the closing credits of Super Mario World in five minutes. Someone finished the game in less than 20 minutes. Just look at this Ocarina of Time speedrun. And then there's the charity aspect of it! Awesome Games Done Quick has raised $1.2 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation and this year they're raising money for Doctors Without Borders as well.
speedrun in the world is a really cool thing. For the kind of crowd that cares about this thing, being the record holder for the fastest The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Super Mario Bros. You: Mostly because it's fun, I imagine, but there are a lot of reasons to choose from. They often share videos of these speedrunning attempts on YouTube, Twitch (which is like YouTube but live), and this event that the kid on Colbert was promoting: Awesome Games Done Quick. The community of people who are interested in this keep track of who finished what game how quickly, and they're constantly trying to one-up each other with shorter times by finding shortcuts and more efficient ways to finish the game. It's basically the practice of people finishing games as fast as possible. This could be a difficult and frustrating conversation, but I've assembled this helpful script to get you through it: If you play video games, your parents are probably going to call you shortly after the show ends and demand that you explain the baffling thing they just saw on Colbert.
